He makes the bridge contractor, the Home Minister, whose name appears in the initial scenes of the movie as Gilani (stated in a newspaper headline), and the ruling party's money man (Pratap Nimbalkar), confess their corrupt activities on a live broadcast on TV.

Towards the end, Nirmal travels back to his house in Mumbai with Rohan, and calls a TV news channel from there and demands all those who were involved in the bridge collapse, including the Home Minister, come to his house, threatening to kill Rohan and himself if they don't. The news becomes a hot item in the media. Moved and depressed by his loss, Nirmal decided to seek revenge from the politicians and others responsible for the death of his son. Apu died when a bridge collapsed on him on his way to school.
It is then revealed that Nirmal had a happy family with his son, Apu (short for Apurva), after his wife left them.
His demand is that he wants his son, who was lost in an act of negligence by the government, be found. One day, the kidnapper call the father of Cheeku to convey a message to the Home Minister that the kidnapper has kidnapped the son of the Home Minister on purpose. Nirmal keeps traveling via public transport to evade his location. Nirmal tells Rohan that Cheeku will be killed if he refuses to co-operate with him. Nirmal shows Rohan a pre-recorded video of his friend Cheeku who is in a drugged state struggling with fear. Rohan shows his anger towards Nirmal for kidnapping him. Rohan is actually kidnapped by Nirmal (Irrfan Khan) after drugging him. Behind the scenes the security agencies try to find the location of the kidnapper without raising any kind of suspicion. For a long time there is silence from the kidnapper and everyone is left guessing as who it might be and at the same time the investigation is kept extremely secret, so as to keep the kidnapper(s) from killing Rohan. Initially the case is thought of mistaken identity wherein the kidnapper might have tried to kidnap the friend of Rohan, Cheeku who was also drugged while kidnapping. CBI officer Nachiket Verma (Jimmy Sheirgill) heads the case and gets restrain order from all the other security agencies to make sure that the kidnappers don't panic and kill Rohan. Rohan is the only son of the Home Minister. A 10 year old child, Rohan, is kidnapped from his hostel.Kireedam has a sequel film Chenkol(1993) which was never dubbed or remade in Hindi.The synopsis below may give away important plot points. This blockbuster film was remade in Hindi as Gardish(1993) directed by Priyadarshan. He has directed music in such hits like Dhoom(2004), Gangster(2006), Jab We Met(2007), Race(2008) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan(2015). Before I forget, I would like to mention the superb music in the film by the veteran music director Pritam. The age-old problem of government corruption in India is re-emphasized. So technology wise, a lot has changed in India. Smartphones are by the billion in India, and then we have the newer iPads. The effect new digital technology is making in spreading information quickly around the world is shown in this film. This is a powerful psychological drama and very relevant in today's world. He has managed to make tears fall from my eyes at many points in this film. In this film he is at the pinnacle of his acting prowess. I enjoyed his performance in Billu Barber(2009) and again in The Lunchbox(2013). He is becoming the undisputed people's champion with films like these. I have mentioned again and again how impressed I am with Irrfan Khan's steady rise in Bollywood. I have also seen him act in the film 404(2011).
I have already seen his previous films: Force(2011), Drishyam(2015) and Rocky Handsome(2016). I will not reveal more - you will have to see this brilliant film directed by an extraordinary director: Nishikant Kamat. However Nirmal's life is shattered by an unforeseen calamity. On one occasion his son remarked about the whereabouts of his mother and he said that she left him for a career in the United States. All the spare time he has he spends with his son, playing with him and teaching him. As a single parent, Nirmal Kumar(Irrfan Khan) life is fulfilled by caring for this little boy. The plot of the film deals with a man who has lost the only thing in life that is dear to him. This is such a powerful film, and not just a film, but a powerful statement.
